Hamburg Süd signs up to new round-the-world services
  Date:2002-09-06
COLUMBUS Line, a unit of German shipping company Hamburg Sud, has signed a cooperation agreement with industry peers P&O Nedlloyd, Contship and CMA CGM to provide two new round-the-world (RTW) transport services from November.

The agreement is subject to regulatory approval. The first service, named Eastabout, will involve weekly trips from Australia/New Zealand to the US East Coast via the Panama Canal and back to the point of origin via Europe and the Suez Canal.

Ten new 4,100 teu vessels provided by the partner lines will be deployed for Eastabout. The other service, named Westabout, will involve weekly sailings from the US East Coast to the Pacific Rim and Australia/New Zealand, continuing on to Europe via the Suez Canal, before returning to the point of origin. The Westabout service will require 12 2,100 teu vessels.

Columbus Line said that apart from the frequency of the service, another key advantage was the shortened travel times made possible by the new vessels.

A trip from Australia/New Zealand to Philadelphia, for example, would be reduced by six days, it said. Moreover, the vessels had expanded reefer capacity to transport meat between Australia/New Zealand and the US East Coast, it added.
