The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has decided to add the issue of Chinese seafarers to its future plan of activities. This was finalized upon the approval by all the countries of the proposal raised by the president of the All Japan Seamen's Union (JSU), Sakae Idemoto at the Seafarers' General Meeting in the 40th Convention held in Vancouver, Canada. The said taskforce will be entrusted to the Fair Practice Committee (FPC), which plans to conduct concrete discussions on its formation in the future. In the most recent once-in-four-years ITF convention (Aug. 14~21) the participants talked about the main theme of "Globalization of Solidarity". Presentations were made on the effects to the employment and living of transport workers of the easing of rules/control, privatization and excessive cost competition brought about by the economic globalization. Countries from Asia aggressively participated in the discussions, demanding that the other participants listen to what they had to say.
