Cosco to expand China-Japan hot delivery service
  Date:2002-09-10
Chinese shipping giant Cosco is preparing to expand its popular fixed-day, fixed-time hot delivery services (HDS) to Japan. Cosco, which takes HDS cargo only in Shanghai now, said that arrangements are being made to have cargo accepted also in southern and northern China. The service from southern China will be inaugurated within days, it said.

HDS allows cargo to be delivered within two to three hours of the ship's arrival. When time needed for customs clearance at both ends of the service is taken into account, HDS can beat air transport in terms of transit time. It also excels air transport in both cost and volume terms. This is why HDS is becoming increasingly popular among shippers of apparel who require on-time delivery. Cosco said that it has been receiving inquiries from electrical appliance retailers about its new Shanghai-Yokohama HDS service.

The concept of HDS was first brought into the China-Japan ferry service in 2000. Cosco began test operations late last year in a bid to introduce HDS to the container service. Convinced that reliable services are practicable, it inaugurated its first HDS from Shanghai to Moji in May this year. Similar services were launched to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in June and to Yokohama in late August.
